PRESS RELEASE FROM THE RT HON PETER LILLEY MP

Tuesday December 15th 2009

LILLEY SEEKS COMPENSATION FOR FRUSTRATED RAIL PASSENGERS

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, asked for details of the compensation arrangements for passengers when he met First Capital Connect bosses to discuss the recent disruption of train services.

The meeting, at Westminster, was organised by Anne Main, the MP for St Albans, and all MPs with constituencies on the FCC network were invited.

Peter Lilley said: “I asked them about compensation arrangements because so many of my constituents have suffered considerable inconvenience and delays because of the unreliable service provided by FCC.

“The company said they would not be hiding behind changes in the timetable to avoid paying compensation. They promised to publish a clear statement about compensation arrangements on their website and to inform MPs directly. Anyone who is delayed by more than thirty minutes in line with the usual timetable, not the revised one, will be eligible to claim.

“They apologised for past failures in communication with the public and with us, and said they would try to do much better.

“According to the company, the problem was aggravated by the late arrival of new rolling stock in the summer. Because existing drivers had to be trained on the new units, an extra strain was placed on the workforce and on the company’s ability to run a full service.

“They say they have now agreed a proposal with the train drivers’ union, ASLEF, which they hope the majority of staff will accept and return to normal working. However, the union will have to ballot its members so it may be well into the new year before the agreement can be ratified.

“I felt this was a useful and productive meeting and I am grateful to my colleague Anne Main for bringing all the parties together and chairing the discussion.”
