PRESS RELEASE FROM THE RT HON PETER LILLEY MP

Wednesday July 7th 2010

LILLEY WELCOMES YOUNG PEOPLE TO PARLIAMENT

About a hundred young people from Hertfordshire gathered in the Grand Committee Room of the House of Commons last week at the invitation of Peter Lilley, the MP for Hitchin and Harpenden.

He said: “Every year I invite people reaching their 18th birthday to come to Westminster to find out how the place works, what MPs do and to talk about the issues that concern them.

“We started off with a question and discussion session in the committee room. The topics ranged from university tuition fees to employment prospects by way of cutting waste in the public sector and what was the right way to tackle the country’s economic difficulties.

“It is always very refreshing to talk face to face with young people. They bring fresh ideas and a new outlook, and I like to know what subjects are most important to them.

“After the main discussion, we visited the House of Commons and the Lords after which about fifty of them crammed into my office and we carried on talking until late.

“I like to think sessions like this show young people that politics and politicians are not somehow separate from their lives, but they can get involved themselves in so many different ways.”
