PRESS RELEASE FROM THE RT HON PETER LILLEY MP

LILLEY GLAD TO SEE END OF REGIONAL HOUSING TARGETS

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, has welcomed the government’s decision to revoke the regional housing strategy which might have led to large scale expansion of Luton into Hertfordshire.

He said: “The Regional Spatial Strategy for the east of England was a cumbersome and blunt instrument for dealing with housing needs. In future it will be up to local communities to make the right decisions about planning in their area.

“Expansion from Luton into Hertfordshire was not needed. Indeed, it was opposed by many people in Luton itself because it would have done permanent damage to the invaluable Green Belt which makes this part of the country so special.

“I want to congratulate all the people who campaigned against the development plans. The work of pressure groups such as Keep East of Luton Green was vital in ensuring that these unnecessary proposals, based on top-down targets, could not be rushed through.

“We must, however, continue to guard against ongoing threats to build houses in areas which should be retained for the benefit of everyone.   We do need to build more homes because of the huge expansion of the population over the last decade.   Meeting that need will involve difficult choices, but local people are best placed to decide where additional housing should be provided.”
