MPs BACK COUNCIL CALL TO SQUASH GREEN BELT DEVELOPMENT

- Wednesday, 21st December 2011

Peter Lilley MP and Oliver Heald MP have joined with North Hertfordshire District Council to urge the Planning Minister to deliver the coup de grace to plans to build 3,600 homes on Green Belt West of Stevenage. The original plans were approved by the last Labour government. However, a court decision earlier this year said the previous Secretary of State’s decision was flawed and referred the matter back to the Department for Communities and Local Government. Peter Lilley and his colleagues have written to Bob Neill, Minister at the Department, urging him to confirm that the application will now be permanently refused.

Peter Lilley said: “Under the new Localism Bill it should be up to local communities to decide where and how many houses they build in their area. We do need to build more homes but they should not be in the green belt.”
