Lilley Looking Forward to Schools' Debating Competition

- Wednesday, 15th March 2017

Peter Lilley will welcome local students to Parliament on Thursday (16th March) as a record number of young debaters take part in the annual Hitchin and Harpenden Schools' Debating Competition.

Peter said: "I am delighted that all the state schools in my constituency have entered teams in this year's competition, as well as St Albans High School for Girls, who won last year. I look forward to seeing how the students tackle this year's motions. They will be judged by two highly competent and politically-balanced panels."

This year, the younger students (years 10-11) will debate whether voting should be made compulsory, whether free speech means the right to offend, and whether we will need to build homes on the Green Belt. Older teams (years 12-13) will debate whether 'safe spaces' in universities should be abolished, whether prisoners should be allowed to vote, and whether the invitation to President Trump should be withdrawn."
