LILLEY CALLS FOR PROPOSED REDUCTION IN TRAVELLER AND GYPSY CARAVAN PITCHES TO BE IN ST ALBANS AND HA

- Monday, 1st October 2007

Peter Lilley, MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, expressed disappointment that the East of England Regional Authority had only decided to reduce by 30 plans to increase the requirement on local authorities to build 1,220 additional new caravan pitches needed in the region despite strong opposition in Parliament and from the public. He called for St Albans and Harpenden to get the lion’s share of that reduction in its quota since the initial allocation required St Albans District Council to accept a disproportionate amount of the increase.

Peter Lilley said: "This is a pathetically small token change. The best we can hope is that a disproportionate part of the reduction will be made in the quota for St Albans and Harpenden since the initial allocation required St Albans District Council to accept a disproportionate share of the new sites. It already has more existing sites than anywhere else in Hertfordshire.”
